우란차부에서 후허하오터 여행: 후이텅시러 초원 활동(선택)+내몽골 박물관+다자오사
If you don't want to miss the most beautiful moment on the grassland, get up early today before dawn (around 4 AM) and quietly wait for the sunrise on the Huitengxile grassland (optional). As the first rays of sunlight slowly rise and spill over the endless grassland, the whole grassland is dyed in a soft golden glow—a very healing moment.
Optional grassland activities: (at your own expense)
1. Grassland horseback riding: When the weather is clear, you can ride a horse on the Huitengxile grassland.
Beginner experience: A herdsman leads the horse and you ride safely within a designated area, most suitable for first-time visitors.
Free riding: If you are skilled at riding, you can also rent a horse and gallop freely. However, this method carries risks at your own responsibility, and is generally not recommended for beginners.
Warm reminder: The two riding methods have different prices, so before getting on the horse, please confirm the price and riding time with the herdsman.
2. Visit a herdsman's home: Enter a local Mongolian herdsman's home and experience their nomadic daily life.
After bidding farewell to the grassland, return to Hohhot to visit the Inner Mongolia Museum (closed on Mondays). 【Inner Mongolia Museum】was established in 1957 and is a national first-class museum, with more than 150,000 items in its collection, like a three-dimensional 'encyclopedia' telling the story of this plateau from prehistoric times to modern times. What you can see here:
Dinosaur fossils: The Chagan Nur dinosaur fossils, the largest dinosaurs of the Asian Cretaceous. Standing before them, it feels as if you can hear ancient footsteps.
Xiongnu king's gold crown (Warring States period eagle-shaped gold crown ornament): Weighing 1934g, it is a relic of the Xiongnu king and a 'representative collection' of the Inner Mongolia Museum.
Painted wooden coffin (Liao dynasty): Over a thousand years old, the paint on the coffin is still vivid, telling of the Khitan people's view of life and death.
Jun ware incense burner (Yuan dynasty): The four characters 'Xiao Song Zi Zao' are inscribed on the bottom, so it is also called the 'Xiao Song Zi Zao incense burner,' an outstanding representative work of Yuan dynasty Jun ware porcelain.
Deer-head gold step-shake crown (Northern Wei), Liao dynasty gold mask…… every artifact is a piece of dust-laden history.
Warm reminder: If the Inner Mongolia Museum is closed or the exhibition halls are adjusted, we will arrange a visit to the Inner Mongolia Natural History Museum. It also has amazing dinosaur fossils and vivid natural ecology exhibits, allowing you to feel Inner Mongolia's forests, grasslands, and deserts across time.
Afterward, visit Dazhao Temple. 【Dazhao Temple】(its formal Tibetan name is 'Dazhao Wuliang Temple') is the first Tibetan Buddhist temple in Hohhot, founded in 1579 by Altan Khan, leader of the Mongol Tumet tribe, and the largest Tibetan Buddhist holy site in Inner Mongolia. The temple houses a Shakyamuni Buddha statue cast from 30,000 taels of pure silver, so it is also called the 'Silver Buddha Temple.' This silver Buddha, together with the coiled dragon pillars in the hall and the Ming dynasty murals, are called the 'Three Wonders of Dazhao.' The silver Buddha is compassionate and majestic, the dragon carvings are vivid, and the murals are still clear after hundreds of years—all are precious legacies of the Ming dynasty.
Dazhao Temple's architecture is also worth seeing. Laid out along the central axis, it blends Han, Tibetan, and Mongolian styles; the Han-style gable-and-hip roof and the Tibetan-style flat roof complement each other, antique and majestic. When the Qing Kangxi Emperor campaigned against Galdan, he stayed here, so Dazhao Temple was also honorably called the 'Imperial Temple.' Even now, the temple houses the Kangxi Emperor's memorial tablet and imperial objects such as the dragon-phoenix peacock umbrella and the pearl octagonal palace lantern.
When you leave the main hall, be sure to see the Eight Stupas of Shakyamuni in the square. Eight white stupas stand in a row, symbolizing the eight merits of the Buddha's life, and they are the most popular spot for tourists to take photos. If it coincides with the fifteenth day of the first lunar month or the fifteenth day of the sixth lunar month, that is a rare opportunity. These two days are Dazhao Temple's Buddha-unfurling festival (Cham festival), when the temple's huge thangka is brought out and hung high, and lamas wear masks and dance the mysterious 'Cham dance,' creating a very grand scene.
In the evening, stay overnight in Hohhot.
Recommended free-time activities
1. Visit more temples in Hohhot: Opposite Dazhao Temple is Xilitu Zhao (walkable, visit at your own expense). About 1 km to the east is the Five Pagoda Temple Museum (closed on Mondays). If you have enough time, visit them together.
2. Explore Hohhot's cuisine: Saishang Laojie and Tongshun Xiang next to Dazhao Temple are very lively old streets. Inside Ming-Qing style buildings hide local snacks and handicrafts. Grilled milk tofu, yogurt cakes, Mongolian knives, leather paintings…… as you stroll casually, you might discover a little item you like.
