Which Entry Facilitation Policy Applies to Me: A Four-Step Self-Check and Results Comparison

Run through five variables in order—nationality, itinerary, port of entry, length of stay, and purpose of travel—and you can pinpoint which type of entry facilitation policy you fall under. This article provides a four-step determination process you can follow, along with the most error-prone points at each step.

Entry facilitation policies are not one-size-fits-all; they are determined by four variables together: your nationality, your itinerary, which port you enter through, and how long you plan to stay. Go through the four steps below and you can basically reach a conclusion yourself.

Step 1: Is your passport nationality on the visa-free list?

China currently implements unilateral visa-free entry for about 50 countries (as of November 2026). Holders of ordinary passports may enter visa-free for stays of no more than 30 days, for purposes covering tourism, business, visiting relatives, exchanges and transit. The list is expanded in batches, and some countries are on trial periods, so you must reconfirm before travel whether it is still valid for that trip.

Note: Visa-free entry usually applies only to ordinary passports. Diplomatic and service passports have separate arrangements; travel documents, refugee travel documents and similar are generally not covered.

Step 2: Are you "transiting through China to a third country"?

The core condition for the 240-hour transit visa-free policy is not "connecting flights" but traveling to a third country or region: the departure country and the destination country cannot be the same. London→Beijing→London does not qualify; London→Beijing→Tokyo does. You must hold a connecting ticket with confirmed date and seat; airlines verify this on the ground, and without an onward ticket you will usually be denied boarding outright.

The stay period is calculated as 240 hours from midnight of the day after entry, not from the moment you pass border inspection. The permitted area of activity is limited to the allowed areas of 24 provinces (autonomous regions and municipalities); within the area you may travel across provinces, but outside the area you need a visa.

Step 3: Are you only transiting at the airport without leaving the port?

24-hour direct transit is open to all nationalities: with a confirmed onward ticket, without leaving the international transit area and without passing border inspection, no visa is required. Some airports have dedicated direct transit channels. If you want to enter the city during a connection, you must use the transit visa-free policy in Step 2 instead (provided your nationality qualifies).

Step 4: Are you only going to specific regions?

Regional visa-free entry mainly falls into three categories: Hainan (59 countries, 30 days, limited to Hainan Province), designated routes for ASEAN country tour groups, and cruise group entry (15 days). The common point is "region- or group-bound": once you need to go beyond the limited scope, you must obtain a visa in advance.

Results comparison table

Your situationConclusion
Nationality on the visa-free list, stay ≤30 days, purpose is tourism/business/visiting relatives/exchangesUnilateral visa-free, enter directly
Nationality not on the list, transiting through China to a third country, stay ≤10 days, entering through designated ports240-hour transit visa-free
Any nationality, only connecting at the airport without leaving the port, ≤24 hours24-hour direct transit
Only going to Hainan, or with a designated tour group, or with a cruise groupCorresponding regional visa-free entry
Stay exceeds 30 days, or work/study/interviews required, or going outside the limited areasMust obtain a visa in advance

What to do within 24 hours after entry

After entering China, foreigners should complete accommodation registration within 24 hours: if staying at a hotel, the hotel handles it; if staying with relatives or friends or at a homestay, you must go to the local public security police station in person. This step is often overlooked, yet it directly affects subsequent extensions and the completeness of records when exiting.

The conclusion is only a "path", not a "permit". What really determines whether you can board and enter is verification at border inspection, so carrying the four pieces of information—nationality, port, connecting ticket and accommodation booking—with you is more useful than memorizing conclusions.
